There are lots of exciting things happening for Big Brother & the
Holding Company

SONY Records has recently released Box of Pearls, featuring
the band's Mainstream and Cheap Thrills albums with bonus
recordings, with liner notes by Sam Andrew. Live at Winterland
1968 was released by SONY last year. Legend Records in France has
released a CD documenting rehearsal sessions of the band from the
early 70's.

There are at least three films in the works about Janis
Joplin and one or all of them will reach the theaters this year.
John Cooke and Alice Echols have written books center on Janis,
Big Brother and those wild years they had together. Jeanne-Martine
Vacher has published Sur La Route de Janis Joplin, probably the
best writing on Janis' career thus far.

Big Brother's latest studio album "Do What You Love" is
being distributed nationally and selling well at shows
·
Big Brother tunes "Combination of the Two" and "Ball and
Chain" were featured prominently in Fear and Loathing in Las
Vegas, starring Johnny Depp. Bringing Out the Dead, a Martin
Scorsese-Nicholas Cage film also features "Combination of the Two"
·
There are numerous television shows currently running about
Janis and Big Brother, including BBC, VH-1 and E-Channel.

Big Brother was the feature cover story in both Goldmine
and Discoveries Magazines in l998.

Big Brother has entered the school and art cinema market
with a series of videos and lecture/question sessions. This has
been presented at Columbia University in New York, Marquette
University in Milwaukee and at the Lark and Roxie Theaters in the
San Francisco Bay Area.

Sam Andrew is the music director of Love, Janis, a play
based on Janis' letters home. The play has been mounted in Denver,
Austin, Cleveland, Chicago and it will soon go on to New York and
London.

The band is actively touring the States as well as
Internationally - Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany,
France, Spain, Italy, Mexico and Canada. Big Brother was featured
at Rockin in the Rockies and MagnoliaFest Music Festivals in 1999
and are planning European Festival dates for the summer of 2000.
The current lineup consists of original band members Peter Albin,
Sam Andrew, and David Getz. The band has been actively touring
since reforming back in l987. The backbone of Big Brother & the
Holding Company remains its solid rhythm section and signature
psychedelic blues guitar.Bay Area guitarist Tom Finch has been
with the band for the last three years and vocals have been shared
by some very talented ladies, including Lisa Mills, Halley
Devestern, Lisa Battle, Cathy Richardson, and Andra Mitrovich, the
latter two starring in the play Love, Janis.
Big Brother & the Holding Company were pioneers of the music scene
in the San Francisco bay area before Janis joined the band and had
two successful albums after she left - "Be A Brother" and "How
Hard It Is". Reviews of SONY releases finally credit the band's
contribution to launching Joplin's career and acknowledge they
were probably the best band she ever sang with. Sam, David and
Peter are all involved with promotion for shows and have conducted
hundreds of telephone and television interviews. |
